Netting & Electric Fishing

We use the best quality equipment available, our electric fishing gear and seine nets are the best money can buy!

The removal of fish from a fishery is now a very common practice in modern day fishery management. There are a number of reasons to do this and it can have fantastic benefits for your water. Firstly, to run a successful fishery you ideally need to know the total bio-mass, this is the total amount of fish in weight that the water contains.

Knowing the bio-mass is imperative to making well informed decisions and gives you a better understanding of what is going on under the surface. It can help you make better judgments on stocking programmes and will also help you work out feed ratios for any feeding programme you have in place for your fishery or stock pond. Our netting or electric fishing service is the most efficient and cost effective way of getting an idea of your bio mass and gives you solid ground to work off for future decision making.

Removing the smaller fish gives lovely specimens like this chance to grow even bigger.

Our netting services are also great for surveying how much recruitment your water gets each year, recruitment basically means the amount of fry that have survived to the fingerling stage and beyond. Some waters have a very high level of recruitment and some extremely poor. These levels can have massive impacts on your fishery and if not managed correctly they can, over a number of years, lead to a decline in fish health and even be the underlying cause of oxygen crashes.

This can easily be avoided with a bit of simple management and netting your waters every year or two. The removal of these small fish, mainly roach, perch and skimmers etc free up much needed space, food and dissolved oxygen for the more desirable fish species of a size that people want to catch. In densely stocked waters these surplus nuisance fish have very little chance of growing to a size where they would be classed as desirable net fillers and the benefits from removing them on mass are outstanding. You can very often see a huge difference in overall fish health and size in a very short space of time, specimen carp waters that reduce their nuisance bream and roach shoals quite often see multiple pound weight gains from their top end fish in the first year.

Yearly fish cropping is a necessity to keep your fishery productive long term.

We always hear from clubs and match waters that want to buy more fish as catch rates are slowing, when the reality of it is they would probably benefit more from a reduction, this can really help with the productivity of the water more so than the introduction of more fish. Of course every water is different and you need to have an idea of your stock to be able to make the best decisions for the future of your fishery.

Our netting and electro fishing services are also great for removing predatory fish species like pike and perch, or are an efficient way of moving fish between waters if you have species or size specific lakes on one complex. If you think your lake or pond could benefit from one of our surveys or you think you may need some fish removing or relocated elsewhere. Please don’t hesitate to give 5 star fisheries a call and we will do our very best to help you.

Pike are very beneficial to most fisheries, but on match waters containing small fish a large Pike population may cause issues.
Thinning out bream shoals like this on carp waters has massive benefits for the remaining fish. The extra space, dissolved oxygen and food can make overall health and weights noticeably better very quickly.
